Sophos Sees Surge Of Ransomware Attacks Against Education Sector
Ransomware attacks are increasing in severity in the education sector. In some cases, it can take months to recover.
Sophos’ annual report on the ‘State of Ransomware in Education’ has shown a grim security picture for education.
The annual “State of Ransomware in Education” report collects data from all over the globe and summarizes the global impact of ransomware attacks.
According to the Sophos report, ransomware is increasingly targeting education institutions of all levels – higher and lower education. In 2021, 60% were affected by ransomware attacks, compared with 44% in 2020.

Sophos surveyed 730 respondents from education about ransomware in its State of Ransomware report in 2022.

It is a grim read for security personnel.

These findings revealed that education institutions had the highest data encryption rate at 73 per cent (compared to 65 per cent for other sectors) and took the longest time to recover, with 7 per cent taking over three months, almost twice the average recovery time in other sectors (4%)

Higher education institutions report the longest time it takes to recover ransomware. While 40% say it takes at most one month (20% for other sectors), 94% report, it takes between three and six months.

Education institutions are more likely to be affected by ransomware attacks than other sectors. Ninety-seven per cent of respondents from higher education, 94 per cent from lower education, and 96 per cent of respondents from lower education report that attacks have impacted their ability to operate. Meanwhile, 96% of respondents from higher education and 92% from the private sector report revenue and business losses.

Only 2 per cent of educational institutions were able to recover all their encrypted data after paying ransoms (down compared to 4 per cent in 2020); on average, schools were able to reclaim 62 per cent of encrypted data after paying ransoms (down compared with 68 per cent in 2020).

The State of Ransomware In Education 2022. These findings show that ransomware is increasingly targeting educational institutions, both those in higher and lower education. In 2021, 60% of these attacks were experienced by educational institutions, compared to 44% in 2020. Education institutions had the highest rate of data encryption (73%) compared to other sectors (65%). They took the longest recovery time (7% required at least three months, almost twice the average recovery time for different sectors (4%).

Other findings include the following:

Only 2% of educational institutions recovered all their encrypted data after paying ransoms (down 4% from 2020); schools, on average, could access 62% of encrypted data (down 68% from 2020).

Because of their lack of cybersecurity defences and the wealth of personal data they have, schools are prime targets for attackers,” stated Chester Wisniewski (principal research scientist at Sophos). “Education institutions are more likely to fail to recognize in-progress attacks than other industries, which naturally leads them to have higher encryption success rates and lower attack success. The impact of the encrypted data, which is likely to be confidential student records, is much more significant than that experienced by most industries. Even if some of the data can be restored, it is still being determined what data will be returned by the attackers. The damage done already has impacted the schools, making them more vulnerable to high recovery costs, sometimes even bankruptcy. These attacks will not stop. Therefore, it is essential to prioritize building anti-ransomware defences to identify and mitigate attacks before encryption becomes possible.

Education institutions have the highest ransomware payout rate (100% higher education and 99% lower education). The sector, however, has the most insufficient cyber insurance coverage against ransomware at 78%, compared with 83% in other sectors.

Wisniewski stated that four out of ten schools believe fewer insurance companies are offering them coverage. Nearly half (49%) of these schools report that their cybersecurity needs have increased. “Cyber insurers are becoming more selective in accepting customers. Education organizations need to be able to meet these higher standards. Schools should collaborate with trusted security professionals to help them find the right solutions and meet insurance standards.

Sophos experts have compiled the following recommendations based on the results of their survey:

High-quality defences should be installed and maintained at all points of the environment. Regularly review security controls and ensure they meet the organization’s needs.
Protect your team by actively hunting for threats and stopping them before they can attack. If the group is short on time or needs more skills, consider outsourcing to a Managed Detection and Respond (MDR) team.
Protect the IT environment by identifying and closing security gaps. For example, unpatched devices and unprotected machines. This is where Extended Detection and Response solutions (XDR) are most helpful.

Plan for the worst and keep an updated plan in case of an emergency

To minimize disruption and recover time, make backups and practice restoring them.

The State of Ransomware in Education survey polled 5,600 IT professionals in mid-sized companies (100-5,000 employees) in 31 countries.

Announce Expanding Efforts to Address Critical Shortage of Operating room Nurses

Chamberlain University is the nation’s largest nursing school. The Association of periOperative Nurses (AORN) creates evidence-based guidelines for perioperative practice and education resources. Today, three healthcare systems announced that they would join a workforce readiness initiative to address critical shortages of operating room nurses. They are Loyola Medicine in Chicago, Illinois, Ochsner Health in New Orleans, and Emory Healthcare in Atlanta.

AORN and Chamberlain will jointly launch an online 16-week training module for perioperative nurses. The content was developed by AORN and is available through Chamberlain. It leads to a speciality badge. This program, which aligns with AORN-specific competencies in the perioperative industry, will be offered to Chamberlain students at no cost.

Chamberlain and the three healthcare systems will join forces to offer students on-site experiences in a supervised perioperative setting.

We are pleased to welcome these three prestigious healthcare systems. They join AORN University and Chamberlain University in a national effort to address critical workforce requirements in the perioperative setting. This is Chamberlain’s “Practice Ready” initiative. Specialty Focused” approach to addressing essential workforce requirements in the perioperative setting,” stated Karen Cox, PhD., president of Chamberlain.

This educational initiative is the first of its kind and is being offered in partnership with AORN. AORN developed the training module. The intent is to scale Chamberlain’s speciality badge program through Chamberlain.

Linda Groah (MSN, RN), CNOR, NEA-BC, FAAN CEO/executive director of AORN, stated that she believes strongly in the initiative’s expansion through the participation of these three healthcare systems.

Representatives from the healthcare system said they are open to working with Chamberlain, AORN and other nurses to increase the number of nurses who specialize in perioperative nursing.

“Ochsner Health couldn’t be more excited about participating in this innovative program to introduce more students to the wonderful world of perioperative services while also addressing the need to have more operating nurses in other parts of the Gulf South,” stated Tracey Moffatt (System Chief Nursing Officer and Vice President of Quality, Ochsner Health).

“This initiative addresses a critical need to have more nurses with a perioperative speciality, and it aligns our commitment to providing high-quality patient service in Chicago,” stated Peggy Norton-Rosko, DNP, RN. NEA-C regional chief nursing officer at Loyola Medicine.

Sharon Pappas, PhD, is the chief nurse executive at Emory Healthcare. She stated, “Identifying and preparing perioperative nursing nurses in their early stages of education and career is a proactive approach towards supporting quality health care for students in the metro Atlanta region.”

The program’s speciality badges are designed to build a pool of perioperative nurses. Also known as operating room nurses and surgical nurses, they work with patients during the pre-and post-operative processes and afterwards in post-anaesthesia care units. The State of the Perioperative Nursing Specialty Workforce 2021 Research Paper outlines how academic partnerships can be used to address retention and recruitment issues and cost-effectiveness. According to the research paper, it can cost as much as $120,000 to train and prepare new perioperative nurses1.

According to AORN, the increased number of surgeries and the nationwide shortage of qualified nurses will lead to a greater need for perioperative nursing staff. According to AORN data, 20% of operating room nurses will reach retirement age in the next five years. Chamberlain is part of Adtalem Global Education (NYSE: ATGE) in Chicago.
